ACT! - Support - Database - Importing Goldmine Into ACT!
Document Title: How to Import GoldMine Data into ACT!
Document ID: 1999110711331201

Product(s): ACT! 2000 - PC; ACT! 5.0 - PC; ACT! 6.0 - PC
Operating System(s): Windows 2000; Windows 95; Windows 98; Windows ME; Windows NT; Windows XP Home; Windows XP Pro

Situation:
You want to import your GoldMine data into ACT!

Solution:
These instructions are provided to help you export data from GoldMine and then import it into ACT! This will import contact data only. Depending on which version of GoldMine you have, the steps may vary slightly from those that follow. If you have any questions regarding the export part of the process, we suggest that you contact GoldMine Software.

Note: It may be possible to convert your notes, histories, e-mail addresses, calendar information and group information from Goldmine into an ACT! database by sending your Goldmine database into our Database Services department. For additional information on this, see the following document: How do I convert my Goldmine database into ACT!

Export from GoldMine

  1. Start GoldMine and open the database whose data you want to export.
  2. Choose the Tools menu, and click Export Records. The GoldMine Export Wizard appears.
  3. Click both Export to a new file and DBF file (Figure 1), and then click Next.
  4. The Field Mappings dialog box appears. The fields available for export are displayed in the left column. Select the fields that you want to export, click Add Field, and then click Next. (To select all fields, click the first field in the list to select it, scroll to the bottom of the list, press the Shift key, and click the last field in the list.)
  5. Enter a new name for the file, changing the location to which it will be saved, if desired (for example, C:\EXPORT2ACT.DBF), and then click Next.
  6. When asked if you want to save export settings, click No.
  7. Click Next, and then click Finish.
  8. Exit GoldMine.

Import into ACT!

  1. Start ACT! and open the database into which you want to import the data.

  2. Caution: If the database into which you are going to import the data currently contains contact information, we strongly recommend that you back up the database before continuing.
  3. Choose the File menu, point to Data Exchange and click Import. The Import Wizard appears.
  4. In the File Type list box, select dBASE III-V.
  5. Click the browse button (the button with three dots) next to the Filename and Location list box.
  6. When the Open dialog box appears, browse to and select the file that you exported from GoldMine (for example, C:\EXPORT2ACT.DBF).
  7. Click Open and then click Next.
  8. Click Contact Records Only, and click Next.
  9. Click Use Predefined Map, select GoldMine, and then click Next. The Contact Map dialog box appears.
  10. Many, if not all, of the GoldMine fields (shown in the left column) will already be mapped to the correct fields in the ACT! database (right column). If you have any custom fields in GoldMine that you want to import, you will need to map them manually. If you have not previously created a field in the ACT! database to correspond to the field in the GoldMine database, you can map it to an unused field, for example User 1 (you can swap it to a different field later).
  11. Once you have completed the mapping process, click Finish.
